I hate thrillers but this is so different。 These teenagers a group you would want to be apart of。 Each of them include a very specific part in their friends ship and the all in all plot of the story。 This book deserves more hype and anyone who wants to read a fast-pace thriller I recommend this。

This was very immersive, I was able to visualise everything and was on the edge of my seat! It’s a YA horror so it had some lighthearted humorous moments which helped stop it from being too heavy。 If you love American Horror story and the Conjuring franchise, you’ll love this。 I also really enjoyed the friendship dynamic and the focus on the characters’ emotions。

Good, creepy fun! Horror Hotel really pulled me along。 The characters had distinct voices and compelling relationships, and I loved the ghost hunting meets slasher vibes。

Thank you to netgalley for providing an e-galley for review。 Horror Hotel is an introduction to the Cecil Hotel and the mystery behind Elisa Lam and so many other cases that happened at the infamous site。 The book follows events and history of the Cecil very closely, to it's credit, while bringing a modern feel to it。 Even the cover resembles the Cecil marquee。 This felt like a letter to the Cecil and the victims, then and now, of not forgetting。 Thank you to netgalley for providing an e-galley for review。 Horror Hotel is an introduction to the Cecil Hotel and the mystery behind Elisa Lam and so many other cases that happened at the infamous site。 The book follows events and history of the Cecil very closely, to it's credit, while bringing a modern feel to it。 Even the cover resembles the Cecil marquee。 This felt like a letter to the Cecil and the victims, then and now, of not forgetting。 。。。more

I was so excited for this book, the whole idea of ghost hunting youtubers sounds so fun to me。 I love watching channels like Sam & Colby and the Overnight channel who do these types of videos。But this book was so frustrating to read。 It’s only a small book but it took me forever to read。 The characters were bland, they didn’t feel like a group of friends, the whole youtuber part of the book was done in an annoying way and the characters talked in a way that older generations think gen z talks wh I was so excited for this book, the whole idea of ghost hunting youtubers sounds so fun to me。 I love watching channels like Sam & Colby and the Overnight channel who do these types of videos。But this book was so frustrating to read。 It’s only a small book but it took me forever to read。 The characters were bland, they didn’t feel like a group of friends, the whole youtuber part of the book was done in an annoying way and the characters talked in a way that older generations think gen z talks which caused me to roll my eyes every few pages。The story itself was predictable, which doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing but in a book that already is a ripoff of the Cecil Hotel documentary I expected some twists to keep the story interesting。There are quite a lot of people who enjoyed this book and I read some of the positive reviews hoping it would help me view this book differently but as someone who is interested in the paranormal, who is Gen Z, who knows how filming and YouTube works this book wasn’t for me。 。。。more

"Think Scooby-Doo but more horrific and our latest internet slang", that is what I'd say when describing the Horror Hotel。 It's got that way of holding you into it's mystery, but not in the usual way of a murder mystery or the like (At least, not from my experience)。 It's a difficult feeling to describe, so that's why I say it's like Scooby-Doo, it's the closest I can get to explaining the feeling of reading this book。 It holds the nostalgia of a gang going out to uncover simple mysteries and ge "Think Scooby-Doo but more horrific and our latest internet slang", that is what I'd say when describing the Horror Hotel。 It's got that way of holding you into it's mystery, but not in the usual way of a murder mystery or the like (At least, not from my experience)。 It's a difficult feeling to describe, so that's why I say it's like Scooby-Doo, it's the closest I can get to explaining the feeling of reading this book。 It holds the nostalgia of a gang going out to uncover simple mysteries and getting caught in the crossfire of something bigger, but it does it in a way where while I certainly wouldn't want to give like a 12-year old this book, I can enjoy this with the same joy I had watching all the Scooby-Doo series and movies when I was younger, but in such a fresher way。 The slang is perfectly updated to the slang we use today, and unlike the absolutely cringe-worthy writing of other books and movies I've seen use it, it fits perfectly here, it's written in such a way that isn't mocking like how some movies would take it, it isn't exaggerated, it's just。。。 There。 And it's glorious。 Every character feels real in a way, like there's more to them than you expect, which is sometimes fleshed out in the book, and sometimes just hinted at。 The book swaps between 4 points of view, Chrissy's, Chase's, Emma's, and Kiki's, and every swap just feels so fluid and perfectly placed。 By the time you reach a crescendo of something mind-blowing or shocking in one character's view, you'd swap to another just to leave you wanting more, or by the time you start to get bored of one point of you, you'll be swapped to another character and the flow would continue beautifully。 And can we just talk about the cover art for a minute? I almost didn't pick up this book at the store simply because I'm not super into horror books, they do me a spook and I freak out, but I just couldn't resist this one because of the cover art, it's absolutely breathtaking, especially in real life。 I don't think I've ever adored a book cover as much as this one。 There's so much about this book I absolutely adore that I can't even begin to explain。 All I can say is something that might not hold much value to others as it does me, but I've never both accepted the ending of the book as a perfect closing, but also so desperately want another book in the series as I have with the Varjak Paw series, until reading Horror Hotel。 If I could give a rating higher than 5 stars, I most certainly would。From what I can see from a quick google search on the authors, neither of them have any other books out yet, but I can assure you, I will be watching for the possibility of another book, regardless of if it's related to this one or not, the writing style of this duo is just too lovely to pass up。 。。。more

3。5 stars! This was a quick, intriguing read that I enjoyed overall but it’s one that I wouldn’t read again。 First, the cover of this book is amazing and it’s probably what drew me to the book the most!! Second, I very much recommend the audiobook for this one! The narrator’s for each character are perfectly voiced and helped keep the eerie vibe throughout。 Also, I have a love/hate relationship with multiple pov books because sometimes I just really love certain characters and don’t enjoy others 3。5 stars! This was a quick, intriguing read that I enjoyed overall but it’s one that I wouldn’t read again。 First, the cover of this book is amazing and it’s probably what drew me to the book the most!! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'm being generous here with 2 stars because I typically leave 1 star for the worst books and I liked precisely one scene in this book so it's 2。 I'll start off by saying that I don't think dedicating this book to Elisa Lam does anything to make up for how truly off-putting it is that this book is a ~quirky~ rewrite of the way that she died。 Elisa Lam was a real person and the sensationalism surrounding her death didn't help anyone and didn't solve the case。 It feels incredibly crass to essentia I'm being generous here with 2 stars because I typically leave 1 star for the worst books and I liked precisely one scene in this book so it's 2。 I'll start off by saying that I don't think dedicating this book to Elisa Lam does anything to make up for how truly off-putting it is that this book is a ~quirky~ rewrite of the way that she died。 Elisa Lam was a real person and the sensationalism surrounding her death didn't help anyone and didn't solve the case。 It feels incredibly crass to essentially rewrite her tumblr posts for a character in a book you've modeled off of her (but turned her mental illness into her being psychic which。。。。God, it's just bad on top of bad on top of bad)。It's pretty clear the authors watched the Netflix documentary because they seem to know the Cecil Hotel (the hotel the one in the book is modeled after) has a horrifyingly long history of being a place where bad things happened and because one of the "villains" of this book is literally a pretty unfair caricature of the woman who ran the Cecil Hotel。 Also its 2022, can we stop using people with prominent noses as a sign of their villainy? Plot-wise, this thing is a mess。 It's a ghost hunter show。 It's a psychic show。 It's a ghost story。 It's a true crime story。 It's about 4 incredibly shallow characters being more worried about making out than the fact that they were sharing a hotel with a murderer。 Chase is the jealous not boyfriend (who literally thinks things like BARF and EYE ROLL in his pov as an 18 year old boy???? What tf???) Chrissy is the unbearable love interest of his and Kiki and Emma are so flat their characters could be summed up as The Skeptic and The Crybaby。 The only scene I did like was at the very end when all the ghosts murderer the man who murdered them。 That was it, the rest of this book was tedious and infuriating, when it wasn't filled with things like a character having "an amoral smile" or "she stiffened her lips" through out。 。。。more

3。5Fun and compulsive, but not very deep。 One very good scene that showed where the book could've potentially gone with more development。 I usually read YA horror because I'm not in it for the sex and gore but it skewed too young for me (potential romantic relationships being a driving factor even in the face of a dead body)。 3。5Fun and compulsive, but not very deep。 One very good scene that showed where the book could've potentially gone with more development。 I usually read YA horror because I'm not in it for the sex and gore but it skewed too young for me (potential romantic relationships being a driving factor even in the face of a dead body)。 。。。more

This was a fun quick read that I finished in about 3 hours but it left me wanting more。 More horror, more hotel, more of everything really。 While I loved our four main characters this book does the thing where they end up paring up and dating, which is not something I love。 I did however, love Chrissy and her story arc (minus the relationship)。 The stakes just never felt very high, I was never scared or worried about the characters, the big bad was pretty obvious from the start (not that that wa This was a fun quick read that I finished in about 3 hours but it left me wanting more。 More horror, more hotel, more of everything really。 While I loved our four main characters this book does the thing where they end up paring up and dating, which is not something I love。 I did however, love Chrissy and her story arc (minus the relationship)。 The stakes just never felt very high, I was never scared or worried about the characters, the big bad was pretty obvious from the start (not that that was bad I just wish it had more to do with the hotel)。 After the "final battle" there wasn't really any resolution?? I enjoyed this book so much。 It had everything I wanted。 A great story, plenty of scares, lovable characters and a twist! I am a tad bit surprised by how much I liked this。 Not because I thought it would be bad but because I am not the target age demographic。 I am rating this as a YA horror/thriller, and I did go in with lower expectations but I was pleasantly surprised。 I love how YA can still surprise me all these years later。 It does a lot in a short period of time and I absolutely loved the pacing。 The story is fun, the characters were interesting and there was a ton of action that kept me from ever getting bor I am a tad bit surprised by how much I liked this。 Not because I thought it would be bad but because I am not the target age demographic。 I am rating this as a YA horror/thriller, and I did go in with lower expectations but I was pleasantly surprised。 I love how YA can still surprise me all these years later。 It does a lot in a short period of time and I absolutely loved the pacing。 The story is fun, the characters were interesting and there was a ton of action that kept me from ever getting bored。 If you have read in the genre before or are used to reading adult horror/thrillers you might find this a little predictable。 Overall though, I think it is well written and extremely entertaining。 I think teens new to the thriller/horror genre will really enjoy this。 I love what Underlined is doing I would've been so psyched if there were around when I was younger。 I still think YA doesn't get enough credit for how creative it is and how on trend, sometimes early to a trend, it is。 Highly suggest this to anyone who wants to check it out but especially teens who can handle the subject matter! 。。。more

Short version: 1) Bad writing。2) The true crime aspect。 Yes, there's a murderer。 It is not only painfully obvious but it also doesn't do much to throw anyone off。 It's not a crime to have the Bad Guy™ be rather obvious, but I always appreciate it more if somewhere down a line I get to doubt it for, like, a second at least。 3) The supernatural aspect。 Ghosts exist。 That's pretty much it。 The rest because for some reason I feel passionate about it? IDK I usually can't be bothered to write anything but here I go。 Oh boy, this was bad and I don't even know where to start。 Maybe with my biggest problem: that it's tacky。 Yup, I said it。 I read books that were much worse but at least for all their cliches they were someone's idea。 Not very original, sure, but an idea nevertheless。 "Horror Hotel" isn't just a cliche: it's also a ripped off story of someone who was ACTUALLY ALIVE and happened to die in unfortunate circumstances in a hotel。 Reading it was painful because I could see actual scenes ripped from that Netflix documentary about Cecil Hotel, shoved into a book。 Oh yeah, I am calling you out on Linda。 Come on now。 Worst offender? The blog posts of "Elizabeth Warren" (aka fictional version of Elisa Lam) being so awfully rewritten real posts。 Like, seriously, you had a girl die in a hotel and you couldn't come up with anything other than LITERALLY copy and paste all the details (including that "elevator game" bullshit that was used as a throwaway comment)? Couldn't you just, idk, throw that part out and make up some other case to justify the gang going to this particular hotel? Have some respect。 Then again our protagonists (spoiler alert for something that doesn't happen!) at the very least don't solve Elizabeth/Eliza's murder。 So, a。。。 win?"Horror hotel" was written by two adult women and didn't read like it; yeah I don't need all my YAs to have some outstandish vocabulary or long descriptions filled paragraphs, but something above "I did something。 Other person looked at me。 We talked。" level of writing would be nice。 Maybe if the story was, super good, it would be less noticable。 But alas, by far the longest description in the entire book was probably of what Protag 1 thought of Protag 2's lips, because, sure。 (Did I call them that so it's not a spoiler or because they all have basically the same character with maybe one trait each? Who knows。)The good? It was quick and easy and I just challenged myself to reading a book a week。 Def helped to knock it outta the park。 。。。more
